How To Find Out About Jesus

How can we understand who Jesus is?  Who is he in history, and human affairs? The correct view of Jesus is possibly the most important understanding we can have- all eternity may depend on it

"Simon Peter answered, ' You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.' Jesus replied, 'Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man but by my Father in heaven.'"Matthew 16:17, NIV.

A LITTLE BACKGROUND
The words quoted are the conclusion of a conversation where Jesus asked Simon Peter, "Who do people say I am?" Peter replied that people thought he was John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah or some other prophet. Then Jesus asked, "Who do you say I am?"

People have many ideas about Jesus; some say he was a teacher, mystic or just a man, and some deny his irrefutable existence but a few embrace his Deity.

So, who is Jesus? Peter declared he was the, "Christ the son of the living God,"

CHRIST
Christ is the one who is the Savior, chosen of God to rescue mankind from their sins, give peace to men's hearts, and bring them to a relationship with the Father.

SON
This not to say God gave birth in the physical sense but that God without giving up his deity took on the lower form of humanity, being both fully God and fully man.

LIVING GOD
This is referring to the true God, the only One, the Eternal One, who is active, Lord of life, a far cry for the gods the world then or today.

ENDORSED
Jesus replied, "This was not revealed by man but by my Father in heaven." Jesus did not say, "Peter, you got it wrong. I am not God," instead with the highest endorsement he reaffirms Peter's declaration.

The true person of Christ is something we must get right. We need the Father to reveal to us who he really is.

Pray...
     * For the Father to reveal who Jesus is.
     * To be willing to abandon preconceived ideas.
     * To be willing to change in response to what we learn.
     * As you read the Bible pray for God to show Jesus in its pages.

BLESSED
Christ said Peter was blessed because God revealed the truth to him. We will be blessed when we come to understand who Jesus is. Understanding Jesus will make all the difference in your life because no one who has a genuine encounter with Jesus remains the same.

What Does It Mean That Jesus Is Coming Back?

The Bible tells us that Jesus is going to come back soon.  During Roman persecution, this was great hope for deliverance. What does it mean to us today?

"He who testifies to these things says, 'Yes, I am coming soon.' Amen. Come soon, Lord Jesus." Revelation 22:20, NIV.

The first part of the Bible verse above are the words of Jesus, the last part is the apostle's response.

AFFIRMATION
This verse has several affirmative words, "Testifies, yes and amen." The combined tone of these words is to say this is for certain, agreed upon, and wanted. That "yes" is like Jesus is saying, "This is set in stone and can't change, it will happen- I am coming soon."

AMEN
The Apostle John responds to the promise of Jesus return with "Amen, come soon..."  It like a prayer, and he says it with hope.  This was the same Apostle John who walked with Jesus and rested his head on Jesus' bosom at the last supper; he loved Jesus and longed for his return.

Can we say, "Amen, come soon Lord Jesus?" It appears today we are not as passionate about the Lord's return as the Apostle.  Jesus's return is one of our faith's great hopes, but we are too caught up in this world to want to serve the next one.  We must acknowledge the Bible teaches as fact that Jesus is coming soon, maybe today. We are caught up too much with family, job, hobbies, and amusements, to give his return the proper place in our hearts. What would life be like if we did?

     * Would we treat people differently?
     * Would we spend time different?
     * Would we work more for Jesus and less for self?
     * Would our thoughts be about self or about Jesus and his Glory?
     * Would we be more forgiving and compassionate?
     * Would we see slights and offenses as trivial?
     * Would we find purpose in trials?

LORD
He is coming not as the lowly carpenter but to be Lord of everything.  Scripture pictures his return with a sword, not a shepherd's crook.  He is the righteous and divinely appointed ruler who alone is worthy to rule mankind.  He will take away the sorrows of this world and bring peace, love, and joy.

Jesus' coming does not only affect us but it changes everything for everyone we love.  For some who love Jesus, his coming will be wondrous, but for those who have not trusted him as Savior they will be far from hope.

He is coming soon.  May we be challenged and encouraged by this hope.

Will Jesus Be Worshiped in Heaven? Revelation 5:8

What does the Bible say about Heaven? There will be worship in heaven, but who will be worshiped and who will be doing the worshiping.

"And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the lamb..." Revelation 5:8, NIV*.

WORSHIP IS HUMBLE
When Jesus, who is represented as the sacrificial lamb, takes the scroll (which some think is representing the title deed to the universe), the angelic creatures and elders fall down before him. You might say they lay down to lower themselves before Jesus. This speaks of an attitude of total commitment to worship. This reminds us of our need to be humble and even submissive in my worship.

There is a lot of singing in Revelation 5.
  • The elders sing a new song, verse 9.
  • The angels sing in loud voice, verse 11, 12.
  • The creatures sing, verse 12.
  • Every creature in heaven and earth sing, verse 13.
EXAMPLE
This example encourages us to participate in a worshiping community, there are no soloist in this chapter, it is congregational worship. Lets be thankful to be in a community that worships, and we must always participate in worship services.

SONGS
The songs they sing contains a declaration or proclamation, "You are worthy..." verses 9 12; To him...be praise honor and glory and power..." verse 13. I must remember that in my prayers to declare the worth or value that Jesus is to me.

REASON
The songs contain a because. The reason Jesus is worthy is, "Because you were slain and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation," verse 9b. Because Jesus sacrificed Himself on the cross to pay for our sins and deliver us from the wrath of eternal judgment He is so worthy of our praise and worship and service.

THE CENTER OF WORSHIP
This worship is centered on, "Him who sits on the throne and the lamb..." We may be blessed by the acts of worship, but the purpose and point of it all it to bless Jesus.

We need to make a renewed effort to daily worship the Savior. To learn more about how to find Jesus as your Savior follow this link; Click Here.

Does Anybody Know the Future? Revelation 1:7

What does the Bible say about the future of humanity? It would be exciting to know the details of tomorrow or next year, but for most of us, it is not possible. However, it is possible to know the most important future event of the human race.

Look he is coming in the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of him. So shall it be! Amen." Revelation 1:7, NIV.

These words are from the book of the Revelation of Jesus, often referred to as the Apocalypse. The opening statement is that Jesus is coming back wonderfully, and for most of us, it will not be a good thing.

ALL WILL SEE
Every eye will see Jesus. His coming is not just to a nation or a people or a church. It will not be spiritual or cultural, but in a way that every person will be aware of it. The words "All peoples" are universally inclusive. Not a single human being will escape the event.

HE BRINGS
What Is In The Future?
Mankind will grieve and mourn at his coming. It will be because of our sins, guilt, and missed opportunities to enter into a loving relationship with our creator and redeemer.  The chance to come to Jesus is not extended past the grave; the Bible says, "Today is the day of salvation now is the acceptable time."*. Those who mourn are those who missed the opportunity to come to his love.

THE GOSPEL
In the same book of Revelation, Jesus later declares an invitation. He says, "Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come into him and eat with him and he with me."**  Jesus invites us to a relationship based on his redeeming act on the cross where he took our sins upon himself and bore our punishment. He asks us to respond to his invitation to fellowship with him.

THE PEOPLE OF THE EARTH VS THE PEOPLE OF?
Once we come to Jesus, we are no longer part of the world's system of allegiances. We are no longer people of the world; we become members of the Kingdom of God, we become the people of God, and the people of God will not be part of those who mourn.

JOY
Those who trust in Jesus as Lord and Savior will have peace with God. For those who come to God, the fear of judgment is cast out by the love shown on the cross.

How to Find the Path of Life. Psalm 16:11

We need to know the way of life, one that leads to peace with God, others, and ourselves. How do we find the Way?

"You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand."  Psalm 16:11, NIV*.

BACKGROUND:
This verse is like a prayer of praise.  It is from one of the messianic psalms that speaks of the coming savior, but like many scriptures, this has more than one application.  We can use this verse to inspire worship, and yet we find instruction.

LIFE
The path of life is described as eternal, full of joy and pleasure, forever. It is a life in the presence of God, which must mean life in acceptance with and in accord with God. This life is associated with the image of a path; it is not a life of self-indulgence.
While we rest and do nothing. A path is a road we travel upon and make progress toward a destination; the destination of the path of life is itself life.

Path of Life Illustration.
Often, we hear the metaphor of the path of life used to illustrate a final end at the grave, but the opposite is the truth; the path of life here is eternal and ends with an unending beginning.

MAKE KNOWN
We often think the way of life is a thing to be earned or merited, but it is something that God makes known. We cannot find the way of life without God. This knowing is a knowing of experiencing something, different from head knowledge. Knowing something in the head is one thing, but truly understanding the path of life must be felt in the heart.

JOY
This joy is fullness of joy, not just the transitory and shallow happiness of this world dependent on external sources. This joy is unique —it fills us, but it is caused by God, not ourselves. This joy is associated with being in the presence of God; he is the source, he makes joy known, and he is the one who fills us with joy.  It seems God is not a cosmic killjoy who commands all kinds of 'don't have fun' rules, but instead is the very essence of joy.

PLEASURES
The pleasures of life are eternal; heaven will not be a boring place where we just sit on clouds, wear white, and play dumb harps, but it seems to have a sensual aspect of tactile pleasure. These pleasures are from the very hand of God, so they must be holy and yet be awesome.

THE REVELATION OF THE WAY
Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but by me." John 14:6. And "I have come that they may have life and have it abundantly." John 10:10. To come to Jesus is to come the way of life; he is the revelation of life.

Can Jesus Be Your Friend? Revelation 3 :20

Wouldn't it be wonderful if we were friends with Jesus?

"Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will came in and eat with him and he with me." Revelation 3:20. NIV*.

A Little Background:
This verse is often used to communicate the idea that we need to express saving faith by responding to Jesus. The verse comes from a letter of warning against sin and spiritual defeat. The recipients of the letter were already born again in Christ,
but spiritually they were...
  • lukewarm
  • wretched
  • pitiful
  • blind
  • naked
They lived in defeat and ongoing sin so they were in danger of judgment and were admonished to repent and do the works they did before.

The Solution:
He Is Knocking On The Door
The solution here for spiritual apathy is more Jesus; and the cure for spiritual poverty, lack of direction and purpose is still more Jesus. Jesus makes it easy; he initiates a relationship, he says, "Here I am. I stand at the door and knock," it is a present tense picture of the one who is waiting to share in our hardships here, now, and today.

He says, "If any one hears my voice..." Are we listening to his voice, or are we too busy? What peace and spiritual richness would we possess if we only listened to Jesus's voice through the Bible and worship and fellowship of His church!

We must not only hear his voice but act and, "...open(s) the door..." We must receive Jesus into our lives as savor once and for all and as one who has received salvation, we need to stay open to fellowship and companionship of the Savior.

The Requirement:
We must remember that during our difficulties, Jesus wants to be part of our lives through those challenges. A believer may have invited Jesus into his life many years ago, and in the same way, need to welcome Jesus to be their companion during today's trials. As he waited for us then, he is waiting today to be accepted as an intimate friend during testing.

The Promise of Jesus:
He keeps his word, He said, "I will come in..." The promise is in that one word, "will." You can count on Jesus. This relationship is a "two-way street." He reaffirms it in the words, "I will eat with him and he with me." It is a vital, living, intimate, and active relationship. It is like sitting at the kitchen table with the best friend there ever was and you can just pour out all of your grief to them while holding nothing back.

Is There A Side of Jesus That Is Not So Meek And Mild? Revelation 19:11

We like the picture of Jesus as a baby in a manger, the Jesus with a lamb on his shoulder, or the Jesus who blesses the children. The Bible does give those images of him, but there are some that are less popular.

"I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and makes war. His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God." Revelation 19:11-13. NIV. (see also 14-16)

A LITTLE BACKGROUND

The Book of Revelation tells about the end times. Among its images and pictures is one of the Lord Jesus coming on a white horse crowned as king and making war against the ungodly. This picture may be literal, or it may be figurative. It makes little difference since the point is that Jesus will rule.  He will be the champion king who leads the armies of God; he is seen with a sword (vs. 15), governs the nations with an iron scepter (vs. 16), and his title is "KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS," (vs. 17). This is not the meek Jesus who stood silently before the Roman governor and the Jewish ruling council.

MEEK AND LOWLY

We love to sing about how we have a friend in Jesus.  He said he was meek and lowly.  We must not forget that Jesus is not just the Good Shepherd. He is the climax of all history and will be the one who will rule the universe.  We should love the Lord yet also respect and revere him for his incredible power and position as God.

HIS GREATEST ACT

It is fantastic that though he is King of All, he still became a man born in a stable in the corner of the Roman Empire to walk among his creatures and die to pay for their sins.  We should be inspired to worship him with confidence and draw near him out of loving gratitude.

It is awesome to think that he, the rightful king of the universe, is my Savior, and he would call me friend- even brother.  Since Jesus will rule the universe as the king, it is wise to invite him to lead in our hearts now and to make him the Lord of our lives today.

A prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father.
Give me a clearer vision of Jesus.
Help me to know him correctly.
May I respect him with awe?
Help me to respond to his call to come
And help me put on the yoke of service.
May he who is Lord of the Universe be Lord of my heart.
May I do my part to bring about his kingdom
And may his kingdom come soon.

What Happens When a Christian Has a Vision. Revelation 1:17

What happens when a Christian has a mystical experience, a vision, or a private revelation?

"When I saw him I fell at his feet as though dead,. Then he placed his right hand on me and said, Do not be afraid, I am the first and the last." Revelation 1:17, NIV*.

DREADFUL
The Apostle John's revelation is recorded in the Bible in the Book of Revelation.  It is a vision of Jesus.  We all long for a "Spiritual Mountain-top" experience and would love to see a vision of Jesus.  The Apostle John did, and the vision caused him to fall "at his feet as though dead." Seeing the Lord can be a dreadful thing and still a wonderfully beautiful experience.

John's vision was from the Lord because it brought glory to the Lord, not to John, an institution, or any other entity.

We should all have a deep desire to see the Lord. To do this, we should:

     * Read the Bible to hear his words.
     * Pray to commune with Him.
     * Meet with and fellowship with others who love Jesus.
     * Serve to share in His work.
     * Confess and repent of those things that offend Him.

COMPASSION
Jesus' first words were compassionate, "Do not be afraid..." The Bible is full of instructions to "Fear the Lord," and when we see an example of someone who really does, the Lord gently touches him and comforts him.  It is as if we can fear the Lord without any fear.  This kind of Jesus we all need.

I AM
"I am the first and the Last..." How deep and powerful those seven words are! He is the "First and Last" in the Bible, in history, the plan of mankind's salvation, in the purposes of heaven, in the activities of angles, and in the heart of God.

THE BIG QUESTION
We should ask ourselves, "What is Jesus to me?  Is he my first and last?"  Making Jesus our First and last means many things.  It may mean to make his agenda ours, or to see people like he does, or to consider him in our decisions.  We should ask, "Would it please Jesus if I did this or that."  We must consider, would Jesus be happy with how we are spending our time, or money.  "Would Jesus approve of this activity," and, "How would Jesus treat this person."

RESPONSE
The vision requires a response. We must decide to make Jesus our 'First and last." It is a good and wise decision. He is the "First and Last" with or without me. If we don't make Jesus our "First," We will look back at life someday and see ourselves winding up last.

The Bible's Most Sublime Message About God is For Today - 1 John 1:5

Does God have a message for you? Does He have a message of hope for our dark world?

"This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all." 1 John 1:5.

A MESSAGE
God does have a message for us today. He is communicating to us through creation, conscience, the Scriptures, and ultimately His Son where God revealed the heart of that message through Jesus and preserved that message against all assaults for two thousand years just to deliver that message to us today.

This message is not a bunch of laws with do's and don'ts or about some system of living but it is a message about the person of God. We do not need more rules or programs we need more of God and the message is the most foundational truth about God that there is.

LIGHT
It is the message we need to hear today, "God is light..." The light is good. It reveals things, shows things; it gives color, depth, value, hue, and a million things. The light goes where nothing else can. Light drives the darkness away. God is all this and more. People need light and thrive in light. Our world today needs light- we need God.

     * Light gives hope.
     * Light reveals,
     * Light comforts.
     * Light heals.

NOT ONLY LIGHT BUT...
Not only is God light but just in case we had any doubt we are reassured that in him is "no darkness at all." Here is about the only time you should get excited about the word "NO." darkness is scary and if God had any spot of darkness it would be a bad precedence.  The God of the Bible does not have a dual nature like other religions were good and bad live together in a tense harmony. The slightest compromise of light in God would be the precedence for all darkness.

ALL
God is light and there is not even a hint of evil, or sin, or wickedness in Him. He is ALL good. He has NO darkness AT ALL. That means he will not respond to the allurements of darkness like pride, anger, vanity, greed, sin. Our dealings with God will be in the light. On the other hand, His light will illuminate any darkness in our hearts. He sees our hearts in his light. he sees the struggles, trials and hurts we go through; because of his light, he sees them truly and clearly.

We find confidence knowing He is good, He is light, and He is holy. Every time we come to Him we can be sure He is acting from a basis of light, never of darkness. He sees our hearts in His light.

To come to God is to leave the darkness behind and become a messenger of light.

When it May Be Wrong To Go To Church - Ezekiel 14:1-4.

God Loves You
We think it is always good to go to church, but is there a time when the Bible suggests it is wrong?

"Some of the elders of Israel came to me and sat down in front of me. then the word of the lord came to me"' Son of man, these men have set up idols in their hearts and put wicked stumbling blocks before their faces. Should I let them inquire of me at all? Therefore speak to them and tell them this is what the Sovereign Lord says: When any Israelite sets up idols in his heart and puts a wicked stumbling block before his face and then goes to a prophet, I the Lord will answer them myself in keeping with his great idolatry..." Ezekiel 14:1-4 NIV.

IDOLS
There are many kinds of idolatry but the worst and most deceptive is the idolatry of the heart. Idols misrepresent God, take His glory away, and are untrue in every respect. We think they are innocent but they mislead and guide us down wrong paths away from the very God we seek.

ORIGINS
There are many sources for heart dwelling idols. We can harbor some fantasy life in our imagination, or some bitterness clouds our vision of God. A past experience may stain our view of God. A wrong understanding of God may be caused by our parents, relationships, or contact with others who communicated the error to us.

It is questionable if any of us have a correct idea of the infinite, all powerful, all knowing, God of wonders and majesty. We are not capable of it since He is infinite and we are made of dust.

OUR HEART
There are times when our job, family, or retirement account may be an idol; but other well-meaning values may be exalted to idol statuses, such as ministry, denominational identity, or mission. We may harbor an idol by saying our style of worship is more acceptable than another's, or our standards of Christian conduct is more valid than another's.

An idol may force us to exclude a person from our church because of a culture or heritage or practice; even if the practice or culture is clearly defined as offensive to God once we make that doctrine and not God the standard we have become idolaters and are in danger of hearing Gods rebuke.

THE ONE TRUE GOD
God wants to be known correctly and it benefits us to know Him that way. We only know Him by His gracious revelation of Himself to us. Let's pray and ask God to show himself to us, (at least as much as we can handle). As we seek the truth of His revelation of Himself in honest humility we may come before Him in the confidence of acceptance and not fear His rebuke.

If we are not coming to the place of worship with an open and humble heart that honestly seeks to know and worship the Almighty we are deceiving ourselves and might just as well stay away.

The End Result of Knowledge. Proverbs 22:19

We go to school or study and get our heads full of facts, formulas, dates, and data. What is it all good for? What is the real purpose of education?

“Pay attention and listen to the sayings of the wise; apply your heart to what I teach, for it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart and have all of them ready on your lips. So that your trust may be in the Lord, I teach you today, even you.” Proverbs 22:17-19. NIV.

We are made to learn and grow intellectually. A normal, healthy mind is curious and learns, even if it is the small and mundane things of the day today. The mind that does not learn is ill and experiences entropy.

In its wise sayings, the book of proverbs answers the end purpose of knowledge, understanding, and wisdom. The modern man says it to get ahead, or get a better job, or to fulfill the “American Dream,” but proverbs teach that knowledge is “So that your Trust may be in the Lord.”

God had a purpose when he gave us the ability to reason and learn. Learning about the natural universe around us reveals more of God, and thoughtful consideration of what we learn ought to point us to Him. Since God created all things, any subject, whether science, math, history, sociology or literature, or any other discipline, draws us closer to The Lord. Even to study the structure of a leaf, or the composition of an element or the progress of human history causes the thoughtful to see the Creator's hand. His universe demonstrates His greatness, power, immeasurable creativity, and awesome wisdom. To consider any discipline of study should cause us to declare, “Yes, there must be a God!”

Knowledge should cause us to trust in the Lord. How can you not trust in The One who is so All-knowing and All-powerful? How can you not trust The One who made mother birds, created sunshine, gravity, stars, atoms, the heart, the eye, sound, or any other thing you can consider?

Learning alone is not enough; we need help in our understanding. The proverb encourages us to “Pay attention and listen to the sayings of the wise.” God is not only revealed in creation, but He speaks in the Holy Scriptures to make clear to us His love and purpose. Let’s become devoted to studying His Written Word and His creation.

How To Have Peace In The Apocalypse. Isaiah 54:10. NIV

No one knows if any of us will live to see the days of Great Tribulation, but many of us have our own personal ordeal.

“Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed says the Lord, who has compassion on you.” Isaiah 54:10.

MOUNTAINS
We cannot imagine the mountains shaken and removed, they are the standard of permanence but even if they were scraped away God's love cannot be moved. It is to say God's love will outlast the mountains.

THE ALMIGHTY
Whatever your personal disaster the Almighty God of heaven and earth loves you and sees you. The highest mountains are weak compared to Gods love. His love will never erode or crumble; it is not affected by the forces of nature or our universe. His love is above our disaster and reaches down into it.

His love meets every challenge and it has overcome the greatest challenge- our sin and its judgment.

PEACE
The opposite of apocalypse is peace, and God offers us a “covenant of peace” through Jesus. The Bible says, “Therefore since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ," (Romans 5:1). A covenant is a contract or promise; and that the God of heaven and earth makes a contract is the most solid promise there ever could be.

PROMISE
His promise of peace will stand high after the mountains are dissolved. Our part of the covenant is faith, we must trust in Jesus. Jesus came to rescue us from the personal individual apocalypse of eternity without God’s love. He came to deliver us from death and to give us eternal life. He bought that deliverance by his own blood on the cross for us. We may never have peace in this world and may experience disaster but we will have something far better- Peace with God.

If you are suffering through a personal tribulation and want to find the promise of peace that God offers through Jesus see my other blog.

A prayer

Father God, I am powerless to fix this disaster.
I come to you in weakness, please give strength to my faith,
And I ask for deliverance, from my life and my sin.
I know Jesus came to bring peace, in my soul and with God.
I know his death on the cross pays for my sins,
Those sins have robbed me of peace with God
I accept Your covenant of peace through Jesus.
I trust Jesus as my Savior from this life.
I will obey You Father God, even though trials come.
I thank you for the peace You give me.
