SOUTH COLUMBIA BAPTIST CHRUCH YOUTH LEADERSHIP 1.14

This is handout 1.14, The Spirit Filled Leader, in Foundations to Leadership. I wrote it to help develop the Youth Leaders (LITs) in our Awana Club. This hand-out and others like it are given the the kids at the end of club to take home and review during the week. They write out answers to the questions which they then discuss with a mentor, and return to club. I do not object to it being copied and used.

Foundations in leadership 1.14

The Spirit Filled Leader

On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him. By this he meant the Spirit whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified. John 7:37-39. NIV.

1. Many things happen when we believe in Jesus, these verses do not list them all but what do they say happens when we believe in Jesus?

2. (A) What does the Streams of Water picture here?

(B) What is meant by that picture?

3. “Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom, we will turn this responsibility over to them.” Acts 6:3. “And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus,, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism.” Acts 6:5. In these 2 verses from Acts, the apostles could have made any number of things the criteria of leadership what did they say was the requirement?

4. What do you think it means to be “Full of the Holy Spirit?”

5. We do things that quench Gods Spirit in us, what can you think of that quenches Gods Spirit and keeps us from being the leaders we should be?

When you received Jesus you also received the Holy Spirit. You can’t earn the Holy Spirit but you can stifle it by sin and self will. To be filled by the Holy Spirit is to yield yourself to the Spirit’s control. This is expressed in many ways but most often by a prayer to God where we may tell God that we yield to His Spirits leading and guidance. Some voice such a prayer daily or more often as they feel a need.

Foundations in Leadership 1.8 , A Worksheet On Leadership For Youth.

This is handout 1.8 (The Gifts of You) in Foundations to Leadership. I wrote it to help develop the Youth Leaders (LITs) in our Church Awana Club. They write out answers to the questions which they then discuss with a mentor, and return to club. I do not object to it being copied and used.
_____________

Foundations of Leadership 1.8 The Gifts of You

After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. The man who had received the five talents brought the other five, “Master,” he said, “You entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more. His master replied, “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!” Matthew 25; 19- 21. NIV.

God has given us gifts of character, talents and skills. The Bible teaches we have Gifts of the Spirit often called Spiritual Gifts, (we will discuss spiritual gifts in detail at a later time). A leader needs to have a sense of his or hers natural gifts as well as their spiritual gifts. Those new to service or leadership may need time and experience to mature into their gifts, so their gifts may not yet be apparent.

1. Why do you think a leader must have a strong sense of their natural and spiritual gifts?

2. Why does God give us natural and spiritual gifts?

3. What is our responsibility to others concerning our natural and spiritual gifts?

4. Why does God call us into account for our gifts?

5. A. What do you think are your natural gifts?

5. B. What do you think are your spiritual gifts?

6. Which Gift do you have natural or spiritual which you can use most to the greatest benefit for others?

7. What can you do to use that gift to serve at Awanas?

Foundations of Leadership 1.4

Paul's Unique Example of Christian Leadership -Prayer.

Paul spoke often of his prayers for those he ministered to; a few examples are noted here.

· "I always thank God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus." 1 Corinthians 1:4, NIV.
· "I have not stopped giving thinks for you, remembering you in my prayers." Galatians 1:16, NIV.
· "I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy..." Philippians 1:3-4. NIV.
· "We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you." Colossians 1:3, NIV.
· "We always thank God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers, we continually remember before our God and Father for your work..." 1 Thessalonians 2:2 NIV.
· "With this in mind we constantly pray for you..." 2 Thessalonians 1:11, NIV.
· "For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you..." Colossians 1:19, NIV.
· "I always thank my God as I remember you in my prayers..." Philemon 1:4, NIV.

If the Apostle was so busy building up the church where do you think he found time to pray?

Why do you think Paul spent so much time in prayer?

From the examples above what ways did the Apostle Paul pray? And what kind of prayers did he pray?

What attitudes do the Apostle’s prayers have in common?

How can you follow the example of the Apostle Paul in Prayer?

How can you pray for the kids regularly?
