SOUTH COLUMBIA BAPTIST CHRUCH YOUTH LEADERSHIP 1.14

This is handout 1.14, The Spirit Filled Leader, in Foundations to Leadership. I wrote it to help develop the Youth Leaders (LITs) in our Awana Club. This hand-out and others like it are given the the kids at the end of club to take home and review during the week. They write out answers to the questions which they then discuss with a mentor, and return to club. I do not object to it being copied and used.

Foundations in leadership 1.14

The Spirit Filled Leader

On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him. By this he meant the Spirit whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified. John 7:37-39. NIV.

1. Many things happen when we believe in Jesus, these verses do not list them all but what do they say happens when we believe in Jesus?

2. (A) What does the Streams of Water picture here?

(B) What is meant by that picture?

3. “Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom, we will turn this responsibility over to them.” Acts 6:3. “And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus,, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism.” Acts 6:5. In these 2 verses from Acts, the apostles could have made any number of things the criteria of leadership what did they say was the requirement?

4. What do you think it means to be “Full of the Holy Spirit?”

5. We do things that quench Gods Spirit in us, what can you think of that quenches Gods Spirit and keeps us from being the leaders we should be?

When you received Jesus you also received the Holy Spirit. You can’t earn the Holy Spirit but you can stifle it by sin and self will. To be filled by the Holy Spirit is to yield yourself to the Spirit’s control. This is expressed in many ways but most often by a prayer to God where we may tell God that we yield to His Spirits leading and guidance. Some voice such a prayer daily or more often as they feel a need.

Foundations in Leadership 1.2 For South Columbia Baptist Church Awana

This is handout 1.2 in Foundations to Leadership. I wrote it to help develop the Youth Leaders (LITs) in our Awana Club. They write out answers to the questions which they then discuss with a mentor, and return to club. I do not object to it being copied and used. _________________________________________
Foundations 1.2. You mean THIS is leadership?

He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much. Luke 16:10 (King James Version)
The thing no one tells you about leadership is that successful leaders do a lot of little boring things that look like lots of work for little reward. God is on the lookout for people who do the little things well. He will put them in charge of bigger things.

1. What does the word “faithful” mean?

2. What are some of the little things we do for the kids?

3. How can we do those little things well, or faithfully?

4. What do the others like the kids think when you do some little thing with attention to detail and a loving attitude?

5. Are any of these little things “Little” to God? Why or why not?

6. List three “Little things” you will pay especial attention to

1.
2.
3.

7. How will you do these little things well and faithfully?

Foundations of Leadership 1.1 “Why Leadership?”

When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?’
“Yes, Lord,” He said, “you know that I love you.”
Jesus said “Feed my lambs.”
Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you truly love me?”
He answered, “Yes Lord, you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”
The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, Lord you know all things; you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my sheep…”
John 21:15-17, NIV.

These verses above are from the time after the resurrection when Jesus met the disciples.
Note: “More than these,” may refer to the other disciples or his possessions- fishing boat, etc.

1. What was the big question Jesus asked Peter?

2. Why do you think Jesus asked Peter this question 3 times?

3. What was Peter’s answer?

4. Why do you think Jesus asked Peter this question?

5. What command did Jesus give Peter?

6. How does “take care of my sheep” and “feed my lambs,” show love for Jesus?

7. If this is our standard how can you show love for Jesus?

8. List three ways you can take care of Jesus sheep and feed his lambs?
