Is It Right For A Christian To Boast?

We all boast in some way or another, normally it is considered vain and looked down upon; but is there a boast that is right and good to do?

“Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boast boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight, declares the Lord.” Jeremiah 9:23-24.

Why do we not brag about the Lord?
     * We are too self-absorbed.
     * We are not looking for His works to boast about.
     * We lack courage.
     * Maybe our knowledge of Him is too small to boast about.

GET IT RIGHT
Our thinking is backward.  We cherish things like wisdom, strength, fame, and wealth. Wisdom fades with senility, strength withers with the years, achievements are forgotten, and wealth is uncertain.  If you are going to boast about something what better brag can you have than that you know and understand our Creator?  He is all-knowing, all-powerful, and the source of all blessings.

A GOOD BOAST
It sounds arrogant to boast about knowing and understanding God, but here is an instruction in scripture to do so.  Of course, no one knows Him perfectly, we must keep on seeking and continue to understand Him.

God directs us to boast in a way that is specific.  He says, "Boast about this that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord."  He is sovereign,  He rules, and He is in control by authority and power.  You might boast about an acquaintance with the rich, the powerful, the famous, and even a head of state but God is above them all.  You may look nuts, bragging about Your Heavenly Father but those who are seeking the Almighty will listen.

KNOW HIM
As a finite being, you can only know the infinite through His revelation, and he says here that God "exercises kindness, justice, and righteousness on earth."  These are the things that God is doing every day.  We should brag when we see the kindness, justice, and righteousness that God is doing daily in the world around us.

HIS DELIGHT
He makes it clear what we must know about him; "for in these I delight."  To know that God delights in kindness justice and righteousness is a call to action, if He delights in these things then we should strive to embody them, and pursue them.

May the Almighty reveal Himself to you so that you may boast saying, "I know the Lord!"
